Aokata Port
The Kamigoto area flourished as a hub for exchange with the continent, even serving as a port of call for envoy ships to Tang China during the Heian period. It is also an area where hidden Christians, who had to conceal their faith due to severe persecution by the shogunate during the Edo period, migrated to seek a new life. The history and culture accumulated over time have been continuously passed down, and many historical remains and cultural properties remain throughout the region, including Catholic churches, temples, and shrines. Folk performing arts such as Kamigoto Kagura, whale songs conveying the tradition of whaling, and Hazashi dance have been handed down, forming a unique local culture.
