Kumamoto

Misumi Port

Misumi Port is located at the tip of the Uto Peninsula in the central part of the prefecture and is a natural harbor facing Amakusa Oyano Island. In addition, JR Kyushu's A-Train, which runs from Kumamoto Station to Misumi Station, has brought many visitors to Misumi Port. In the West Port area, the stone-paved wharves and waterways from the time of the port's construction remain unchanged, making it the only port of its kind in Japan and a valuable heritage of industrial modernization. In July 2015, "Misumi West Port" on the western side of Misumi Port, along with the "Miike Coal Mine Manda Pit" in Arao City, Kumamoto Prefecture, was registered as a World Heritage Site as a component asset of "Sites of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution: Iron and Steel, Shipbuilding and Coal Mining."
