Ofunato Port
Ofunato Port is located at the southeastern tip of Iwate Prefecture, along the Pacific coast. It is a typical ria coastline, elongated from north to south with a total length of 6 km. Surrounded by hills and the like, it is a naturally excellent harbor that always protects against wind and waves; in 1887, the warship "Raiden" entered the port, and it was widely recognized. The coastline presents a scenic and varied landscape, and it boasts the scenic spot "Goishi Coast" (designated as a national park). Aquaculture of oysters, scallops, and the like is also thriving within the bay, and it was once a lively port with container shipping routes, cement-related industries, and the arrival of passenger ships. However, it suffered tremendous damage from the Great East Japan Earthquake. In order to be reborn as a town that each and every citizen can take pride in, the port is placing particular emphasis on industrial promotion utilizing the port, focusing on "fisheries, harbor, and tourism."
