Sendai-Shiogama Port (Ishinomaki Area)
Ishinomaki City has long been a port town, and since Magobei Kawamura, on orders from Date Masamune, had a river channel dredged in the 1620s, it flourished as a shipping point for rice. In 1960, construction of a new port began in the Kama district west of the river mouth, and in 1964 the area was designated part of the Sendai Bay New Industrial City and also designated as a Major Port, leading to its development as a hub port in the northern part of the prefecture.
