Tsugaru Port
Tsugaru Port is located on the Sea of Japan side of the Tsugaru Peninsula, on the southern side of the dune belt extending from Lake Jusan. Construction began in 1983 as a base port for the Tsugaru Regional Comprehensive Development Project, and partial operation started in 1997. The port is expected to develop as a distribution port to meet the logistics demand generated from the Tsugaru region and to handle trade with the countries of the Maritime Province of Siberia in preparation for the era of the Sea of Japan Rim. In recent years, the main cargo handled has been the import of construction materials such as limestone and the export of local timber. In addition, since the port is located at the foot of the World Heritage Site "Shirakami-Sanchi," cruise ships also call at the port. Furthermore, in order to create a coastline that makes the most of the natural sandy beach and excellent scenery, offshore breakwaters, artificial beaches, and revetments have been developed and have been in service since fiscal year 2011.
