Wakkanai Port
Wakkanai Port is a major port at the northernmost point of Japan, playing an important role as a distribution hub for northern Hokkaido, a base for coastal and offshore fishing, and a transportation junction connecting Rishiri Island, Rebun Island, and Sakhalin Oblast by ferry. The surrounding area is blessed with abundant marine and land resources, and features attractive natural landscapes including the vast Soya Hills. The "North Breakwater Dome," a symbol of Wakkanai Port, was built in 1936 to protect against waves. It is designated as a Hokkaido Heritage site as a structure without equal in the world, reminiscent of ancient Roman architecture.
